Michael Shaw is a founder of Freedom Advocates, formerly Freedom 21 Santa Cruz. He was a participant in the first Local Agenda 21 initiative in Santa Cruz, California. He saw the flaws in the initiative, and decided to try to counter the impact of sustainable development in his community. The organization he helped to create has become a leader in developing strategies for local organizations. He developed the Freedom 21 Platform and Action Plan, and two powerful booklets, Understanding Sustainable Development – Agenda 21 – A Guide for Public Officials, and Sustainable Development: Global to Local Action Plans.
